Customized Leadership Training: Catolica-Lisbon and Sands China Integrated Resorts

17-Jan-2018 12:35 - 12:55

In little more than a decade, Sheldon Adelson’s bold plans for the Cotai Strip in Macau had transformed a reclaimed swamp into the largest and most profitable integrated resorts in the world. However, Sands China faced competitive, regulatory, and economic challenges to its leadership position, in addition to a tight labour market. In late 2016, Católica-Lisbon was asked by Sands China to propose a programme for top managers that would deepen industry knowledge, enhance international perspectives, increase strategic and people management skills, and retain and motivate top managers. The resulting International Strategic Management Programme for Integrated Resorts (ISLPIR) was designed to address the specific needs of Sands China Resorts. Key features of the ISLPIR included its international character, its three complementary partner schools (Católica-Lisbon, Cornell, and Saint Joseph Macau), and the tailoring of contents to the Sands China context, industry, and organisational challenges. In addition, the ISLPIR engages participants in real business challenges, which they address in teams through a structured process, with the opportunity at the end of the five-month journey to share new ideas with Sands China top management. Cultural excursions, company visits, and other social events facilitate networking among employees from different backgrounds and areas of the company and further differentiate the programme.
