How people are really using AI - 3 years of research

4-Jun-2026 12:15 - 13:15

In this interactive talk, we explore how real people are using generative AI and adapting to this still-new technology. Drawing on three years of research - culminating in the second-most-read Harvard Business Review article of 2025, we’ll look at the transition from novelty to necessity. We’ll describe our unsanitized methodology for mining anonymous online data to capture the ways people use AI for everything from light administrative help like drafting emails to therapeutic support for deep emotional issues. Shadow usage at educational institutions and at work will also be a theme. The style and content will be concrete and tangible throughout, with actual use case examples accompanying the presentation. A core focus of the session will be the dramatic evolution of AI as a cognitive partner, with a specific focus on why "Enhanced Learning" has surged from a niche interest to the #4 global use case over the past 12 months.  By examining three years of shifts in the AI in the Wild Top-100 list, you will gain a sense of the trends and momentum, as well as pick up some AI usage tips for yourselves.
