Humans have always relied on consistent stories to provide comfort in times of radical change. In both the societal discourse as well as corporate communications no meta-narrative about the current AI hype has formed, but three complementary, sometimes competing narratives can be observed: (1) Innovation, (2) Empowerment and (3) Control. While narratives (1) and (3) also carry a negative connotation – innovation coincides with creative destruction, and control implies loss of control, too – the narrative of empowerment can be deployed to reduce digital anxiety (“When will my AI Agent replace me?”) and provide a positive twist of life-long learning and individual “augmentation”.
